Prague Castle is one of the most iconic sights in Prague, and one of the most misunderstood.

 

It's the largest castle complex in the world (yes, it's in the Guinness World Records Book), with over 1,000 years of history. Founded in the 9th century, it carries every architectural style imaginable: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and more.

 

Inside you'll find St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica, and Golden Lane. Kings and queens are buried here, coronations were held here, and the legendary St. Wenceslas Crown is kept here too.

#1 How to Get There

Most tourists take the Old Castle Stairs — 230+ steps. Historic, and completely fine, but tiring.

What I prefer on my private tours is taking Tram 22 or 23 from Malostranská straight to the castle stop. Faster, easier, and a ticket costs just ~$2 USD.

#2 When To Visit

The castle is open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (April–October) / 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (November–March). Arriving at opening isn't bad, for the least amount of crowds come after 2pm. Plan for at least 2-3 hours for a full visit.

#3 Buy Tickets in Advance

Prague gets over 10 million tourists a year. More than 3 million visit the castle. Especially in high season, queues at the ticket desk can hit 30+ minutes, in the heat/cold, on your feet.

#4 Don't Miss the Changing of the Guards

Every day at 12:00 PM at Hradčany Square, right in front of the castle. It's free, it's impressive, and most tourists walk right past it. Worth timing your visit around.
